Located within the San Juan National Forest amid Colorado’s majestic San Juan Mountains, High Country Lodge is situated between Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek Ski area. Wrapped in good old fashioned hospitality, High Country Lodge is a full-service southwest Colorado hotel with a variety of lodging options and loads of mountain charm.
Arrival
We began our 10 day road trip this past summer in Colorado, and then dipped down into Taos for a few days, before returning to Colorado through Pagosa Springs. Road tripping through southwest Colorado is full of visual distractions, with soaring cliffs, ragged peaks, and undisturbed wilderness.
High Country Lodge is yet another distraction, located on the outskirts of town on Highway 160. Facing the highway is the main building with standard hotel rooms and the main lodge with check-in and where breakfast is served. After completing the requiste paperwork, we were directed to drive to the side of the main lodge to our cabin.
Lodging
Tucked between trees, our Single King Private cabin (409) sleeps 2-4, perfect for this couple’s Colorado mountain retreat. The single king side bed is in a separate bedroom, while a sofa sleeper, other relaxed seating, and a table with 4 chairs framed the wood fireplace.
A small kitchenette included a microwave, coffee maker, toaster, small refrigeration, cook-top stove, dishes, pots, pans, and cooking utensils. The bathroom was surprisingly large – and the bath towels were plush and large.
Our travels were during the summer, but for those winter travelers taking advantage of the nearby Wolf Creek Ski resort, the in-floor radiant heat adds another element of coziness.
We traveled with another couple who opted for a Lodge room, their version of a standard hotel room. (See photos below 1st photo and then last clockwise). Choose from 22 Cozy Lodge rooms with one king bed and rooms with one king bed and sofa sleeper, as well as several rooms with 2 queen beds conveniently located in the main lodge building.
Other cabin configurations range from rustic small studio cabins, to spacious one and two bedroom cabins to cozy king cabins (such as ours). Every cabin features a private front porch and, for those looking to get up-close-and-personal with the nature, there’s also plenty of outdoor seating.

Summary
I love this mom-and-pop lodge, owned by Bob, a former National Hockey League all-star, and his tri-lingual French Canadian wife, along with their 2 daughters. The sense of family radiates during your High Country Lodge stay.Starting with the friendly receptionist and right down to the housekeeping staff, you’ll be greeted with a genuine warm smile.
By no means is this a high end lodge (actually more like a sprawling B&B), but every need possible will be granted, and the rooms and grounds are well maintained and clean. You can opt for a more standard hotel room, or spread out with your sweetheart, family or make it a reunion in the many configurations of cabins.
I look forward to returning to the High Country Lodge in Pagosa Springs is a Colorado hotel with my multigenerational family.

Pagosa Springs and High Country Lodge provided the hotel formy review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

Best place to stay. It is quiet and the guests are made to feel very welcome. Bob and France are a wonderful couple, but I am a little prejudiced… seeing as Bob played for one of my favorite teams. I was there 3 summers ago and said I would be back the following year, but did not make it.
Rooms are spacious and very clean. The outside is wonderful and very very beautiful.
Go try them… you will not regret it.
