Formerly known as La Residence, the Senza Hotel was bought by by Kathryn and Craig Hall in 2006, and slowly renovated to transition from country bed and breakfast to modern luxury hotel. “Modern” is certainly the watchword here – from the art that dots the property to the design of the guestrooms, the hotel has a very contemporary feel.
When I stepped into my Garden Suite, I was immediately impressed with the high ceilings and wide open feel of the room. The decor is stylish, with blue and brown accents, concrete walls, and luxe finishes. Garden Suites have one King or two Queen beds and small sitting areas in front of the fireplace. My room also had ample storage in the closet and large dresser, as well as a small work desk. A flat screen TV sat above a beautiful glass-encased gas fireplace.
While Garden Suites are billed as overlooking the hotel’s gardens, my view was of the pool and parking lot. However, Vineyard Suites promise more tranquil views of the vines. Smaller Cellar Kings and Parker Mansion Guestrooms are also available for those who favor a cozier (and more economical) room. In all, the hotel has 41 rooms spread around several buildings set on the property.
In keeping with the modern aesthetic, the spacious tiled bathroom is designed in a contemporary style and has sex appeal to spare. The floors are heated, the large vanity has dual sinks, there’s a deep soaking tub, and the walk-in shower was built for two. However, in its modernity, the room felt a bit cold to me (nothing a few plush rugs wouldn’t fix), and I was disappointed that the toilet was not in a separate enclosed space but rather exposed in the corner of the room (a slight inconvenience for two friends traveling together).
The hotel is located on Highway 29, between Napa and Yountville, though once on the property I head minimal noise from the road. Though it’s close to two populated areas, there’s no restaurant onsite so expect to drive for about 10-15 minutes dinner if you don’t want to try Bistro Don Giovanni, which is the only business within walking distance. There is a spa onsite (in-room treatments are also offered), as well as a small fitness room, pool, hot tub, and fire pit.

The hotel also offers several extras to add value. Wifi is complimentary in all rooms, there’s concierge service, and board games are available at the front desk. Breakfast each day is catered by the lovely Bouchon Bakery, and the chance to sample their delectable creations without the usual line may be reason enough to book a room at Senza. There’s also a complimentary wine and cheese reception each evening.
The Senza may have a few minimal drawbacks: the modern decor and more minimalist designs may feel less welcoming to some, and the location isn’t ideal for anyone who prefers not to drive to dinner at night. But with a central location between Napa and Yountville, a delicious Bouchon breakfast, and comfortable rooms with modern design, it’s a solid bet in Napa Valley.
