Twenty minutes from the Detroit airport and just a short drive to downtown attractions like Greektown, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and Ford Field, the MGM Grand Detroit is a luxury experience in the Motor City.
Part of the MGM Grand Casino, the hotel is accessed via its own valet entrance, but once inside, the check-in area is connected to the rest of the casino. Though the tell-tale smell of casino smoke had made its way–every so faintly–to this area, once I was through the security-manned glass doors that separate the cozy lobby from the rest of the building, the air was fresh and clean and the ambiance was quiet and exclusive.
Rooms are divided into four categories: luxury rooms, executive kings, corner suites, and, concierge-level rooms. My room was a luxury room, with a king bed, small sitting area, work desk, 42-inch plasma digital IP television, and a city view.
Decorated in deep burgundy and soothing sage, with deep wood accents, the room was spacious enough for a short stay at 510 square feet, with ample storage and easy access to electrical outlets, a valued convenience for any business traveler. For more space, go for a corner suite or executive king room. Corner suites are 1,000 square feet, with premium city views, upgraded baths with deep-soaking whirlpool tub, half-baths, and wetbars.
Executive king rooms are 710 square feet with private sitting areas and luxurious garden tubs, and concierge-level rooms have the added perk of complimentary breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres, wifi, and access to a 60-inch HDTV.
Back in my luxury room, my bathroom had a dual vanity, flush-mounted bathroom mirror digital IP television for entertainment, and dual-headed shower.

Onsite, there’s plenty to keep you from leaving the hotel (though when you do leave, the complimentary valet parking makes getting in and out a breeze). Three restaurants (TAP, Wolfgang Puck Steak or Wolfgang Puck Pizzeria & Cucina) plus a half-dozen dining court options and in-room dining will keep you full, and of course, the onsite casino offers plenty of gaming options, with 4,000 slots and video poker games and 98 table games.
My favorite onsite amenity was the fabulous indoor infinity-edge pool, located near the 20,000 square foot fitness center and the spa, which features eight treatment rooms and private men’s and women’s Jacuzzis and steam rooms. After a day exploring Detroit, or the excitement of the casino, it’s the perfect way to relax and cap off a luxurious stay.
If you go: Check-in time is 3pm, check-out time is 11am. Access to the spa, pool, and fitness center are exclusively for guests age 18 and older.
