Beachy Style in Carmel-by-the-Sea at the Hotel Carmel

Tucked away a few blocks from bustling Ocean Avenue in the charming town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Hotel Carmel is a budget-friendly hotel with a beachy-chic vibe.

Formerly the Dolphin Inn, it’s been completely refurbished inside and out. The 27 rooms are designed with traditional cottage-style architecture and costal decor, including brick fireplaces, white louvered wooden shutters, and wicker chairs. Rooms have queen or king beds with pillow-top mattresses and white linens, wood burning fireplaces, flatscreen TVs with cable, minibar, and in-room coffee makers. While the rooms aren’t overly grand, their cute and cozy and offer ample space for two people.

Fireplace rooms are moderately sized, with coastal-inspired art, chic nautical striped carpeting, and (faux) plants that lend a tropical feel. There’s a small desk, two floral-patterned wicker chairs, ample closet with cotton robes, vanity area with sink and storage, and bathroom with shower and tub.

One- and two-bedroom suites are also available. Every room has either a semi-private patio or balcony, with either black director’s chairs or teal canvas chairs.

The rooms are organized in a long two-story building that circles a central courtyard. With inviting Adirondack chairs, a firepit and fireplace, comfortable lounge seating and a small jacuzzi open from 9:30am to 9:30pm, it’s the central social hub of the hotel (tip: if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the courtyard).

There’s also the main reception building, where there’s a quiet library, cozy couch and breakfast nook. The reception office serves a daily morning bagel and coffee buffet (complimented with fresh preserves and a variety of spreads) and evening wine hour.

There’s no onsite spa or fitness center and hearty eaters will need to look elsewhere for breakfast, but for those who would rather spend their time enjoying the charms of Carmel, the Hotel Carmel is an affordable option for a comfortable stay in the heart of town.

I was a guest of the Hotel Carmel but all opinions are my own.
