Wyoming Cowboy Charm: Fairfield Inn and Suites Downtown Cheyenne

When your travels take you to Wyoming, the newest hotel in this western town is the Fairfield Inn and Suites Southwest/Downtown Cheyenne. But don’t let the brand name fool you; this Cheyenne hotel embraces its Western roots, with an enchanting dash of Wyoming Cowboy charm.

Just 100 miles north of Denver travelers can explore the epitome of the Old West in Cheyenne, Wyoming, known for the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration, which is what brought my family here. We wanted to make it a weekend to enjoy Cheyenne Frontier Days and the surrounding area, and the Fairfield Inn and Suites Southwest/Downtown Cheyenne provided us the home base to do just that.

My road trip from Denver took just shy of 2 hours (due to I-25 traffic), and even after dozens of visits to this beautiful Wyoming town, I was not sure where the Fairfield Inn and Suites Downtown Cheyenne was located.

But it was easy to find, off of I-25 the junction of I-25 and I-80 on Lincolnway Exit, minutes from downtown, the state Capital, museums, restaurants, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Microsoft Campus, Warren Air Force Base, and the Union Pacific Historic Train Depot. Prime location with complimentary parking!

I’m with you — I take comfort in staying at brand hotels, such as the Fairfield Inn and Suites part of the Marriott family.  Yet I really love soaking up the culture of the community at the hotel too. When I arrived, the hotel looked really corporate, but my grandson and I unloaded our weekend bag and headed into the lobby without any expectations.

The moment you walk through the automatic front doors, the “brand” feel dissipates, replaced with a step into cowboy country.  The lobby embraces the Old west culture of Cheyenne with posters of cowboys, rodeos, and bisons.  Leather chairs, faux animal prints, and relaxed seating make up the sitting area, while deeper into the lobby is the informal dining area with TVs.

To the right of the dining area is a nook which serves complimentary hot breakfast in the morning. And complimentary breakfast was delicious with scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, make-your-own waffles, fresh fruit, cereal, fresh coffee, milk, and juice!

Accommodations

Choose from 67 rooms and 17 suites. We accessed our double room via an elevator to the left of the reception desk of the 4-story hotel.  Although you can definitely see the Marriott brand stamp in the rooms, the Western decor embraces the Cheyenne address with a print of a bison and wood accents.  

The bathroom is large — which when staying with family allows each of us to have privacy.  I loved the corner desk, with plenty of room to spread out my computer and work.  Complimentary Wi-Fi was strong, although there was no option to upgrade to faster speeds (which I didn’t require on this trip).

Amenities

Although an airport shuttle is not offered, a complimentary local shuttle is available during the week (not weekends) for limited time-frames. Reservations highly recommended.  Plenty of free parking surrounds the hotel.

We LOVED the complimentary hot breakfast, as well as the ability to lounge in the lobby area, and chat with the family. The first floor is where you’ll find the pool and fitness area.  Of course, any time there is a pool my grandchildren are in it, and it was open until 11 pm, which allowed us time to go out for dinner and then return for a late evening swim.

Although the hotel does not offer on-site dining, guests can purchase snacks and drinks near the front desk. Downtown Cheyenne and multiple restaurant options, as well as opportunity to explore the historic downtown, is less than 5-minute drive.
