The Old Sturbridge Village Inn & Reeder Family Lodges in Sturbridge, Massachusetts is a mix of nostalgia that blends family road trips with a history lesson. The history lesson is the inn’s connection to Old Sturbridge Village, the largest outdoor living history museum in New England. With 40 original buildings and costumed interpreters depicting life in the 1830s, the village is a tourist draw for its interactive step back in time.
Nearby, the Old Sturbridge Village Inn and Reeder Family Lodges, affiliated with the museum, connects to the time period with the Olivier Wight House. Built in 1789, the house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places has 10 guest rooms appointed with a queen-size four poster canopy bed and antique furniture loveliness.
The Oliver Wight House is the signature jewel of a larger complex of bungalow-style accommodations.
Also included is the country cottage-style building that houses the dining room where the continental breakfast is served, a parlor sitting room and guest reception desk. For pampering, the Signature Spa has a wide range of services from hair and nails to massages.
Throughout the property are nods to Old Sturbridge Village and the leisure past time of people who during the 19th century. The parlor has checkers, cards and other games for guests to play. In an expansive grassy area, old fashioned hoops for throwing and rolling are on hand for kids to use with how-to-play signage.
In the dining room, handmade pottery made in the village and centerpieces represent the culinary heritage of the time period.
There’s also a playground, an outdoor swimming pool, and a fire pit. An exercise room and laundry room are part of the facilities.
Because each of the two unit bungalows has a separate parking space, guests’ cars are never any further than their unit’s front door. My friend and I shared one of the two double bed rooms.
The roominess was impressive. Someone can sit at the desk penning a novel and not be disturbed by a person watching TV. Even the bathroom was huge. This is a perfect room when one is traveling with kids. Toys, books, electronics. Whatever you bring along on a family road trip, this is a room where you’ll find a place to put it.
Also, the proximity of a playground and the grassy area adds to the kid-friendliness.
For adult sensibility, floral wallpaper, crown molding and soft fabric on the comforters create a cozy, aesthetically pleasing charm.
Each room also comes with a small refrigerator and a coffee maker. WiFi is free.
In addition to double bed rooms, king bed rooms are also available.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have the time to take advantage of the 50% discount our stay would give us for admission to Old Sturbridge Village.
This discount is a huge perk at $14 off for each adult ticket. I have been to the village a few times before. It’s well worth the time and money. Give yourself a couple of hours in order to take in demonstrations as well as the historic buildings and grounds.
I booked our room through Hotels.com, however you can also book from the inn’s website or by calling 508-347-5056. Check out other package deals that range from romance to discounts at Six Flags.
Rates currently range from $125 to $209 depending upon weekend or weekday stay or if you are booking a bungalow of the inn. Oliver Wight Inn rooms are pricier and are only meant for people age 12 and over.
Be sure to grab a complimentary homemade cookie at check-in.
Make your reservations online at the Sturbridge Village website. Or, you can check and compare rates on sites such as Hotels.com or Expedia.
