Lodging in Conques charming Domaine de Cambelong
If you are looking for charm in the Midi-Pyrenees region of France, book a room in Conques at the four-star Domaine de Cambelong hotel. This French hotel was once a water mill, pressing hazelnuts and walnuts into oil and flour, next to the Dourdou River.
A fire destroyed the mill around 1985 and it was eventually transformed into an Auberge. Dominique and Herve Busset bought the former mill in 1999 and began renovating the eight-room country property.
From mill to charming hotel
French artist Pierre Soulages inspired the modern interior design of Domaine de Cambelong’s rooms with lively colors and contemporary furniture. Domaine de Cambelong reminds me of an heirloom tomato; a treasure of unique shape, color, and size, with a flavor that can’t be duplicated in mass.
The country setting and proximity to the village of Conques, make Domaine de Cambelong an excellent choice for couples or a small group traveling together. Eight spacious bedrooms and one junior suite are located on two floors. My room, #12, with a private balcony overlooking the River Dourdou, rented for 250 Euros in the high season (June 15-September 15) and 200 Euros in the low season, with 20 additional Euros for breakfast. Check Domaine de Cambelong’s website for special offers and current pricing.
Gourmet restaurant Herve Busset
Chef Herve Busset and his wife Dominique consider Domaine de Cambelong, as well as the restaurant that bears his name, a labor of love. Chef Busset puts his heart and soul into his gourmet dishes. Meals such as his can not be rushed – allow two hours for dinner.
The next day, visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Conques and then return to Domaine de Cambelong; sip a cocktail on the deck, watch the ducks and blue herons that live by the Dourdou River, or take a dip in the swimming pool.
