Myriad New Hotels Opening in the New Year

A key marker pointing to the resurgence of the hospitality sector is the pace of new hotels opening, some by well-known brands others by newcomers. Here are some of those that caught my attention as 2022 draws to a close.

Hotels Opening in Europe

Hospitality group Maisons Pariente debuts its first urban property in the heart of Paris, France, this year. Le Grand Mazarin, a “stone’s throw from the Seine” in the Marais district, has a “whimsical 17th Century-inspired décor in an historical building and intends to open as a five-star hotel. The first bookable date? April 27, 2023. Rooms start about $733.

The first Mondrian hotel in France opens in March 2023 in Cannes. The Mondrian Cannes is a complete renovation of the former Grand Hotel Cannes and will have 75 guest rooms including three suites. Located right on the Mediterranean Sea, the hotel will have its own private beach.

A new hotel in The Eternal City is Bulgari Hotel Rome, located on Piazza Augusto Imperatore in the Campo Marzio neighborhood in a Modernist building from the 1930s. When it opens sometime in 2023, there will be 114 guestrooms (most of them suites) plus a rotating collection of both modern and antique art, and a library dedicated to the history of jewellery.

Virgin Hotels Glasgow, expected to open in March 2023, is the chain’s second hotel in the United Kingdom. It’s located along the Scottish city’s River Clyde. Each guestroom includes Virgin’s signature design elements: bright red accents, sliding doors to separate living and sleeping areas, and a stand-alone vanity desk. Rocks, a “laid-back but elegant” bar, will offer local whiskies and “creative” cocktails.

Mondrian Ibiza and Hyde Ibiza are set to open on the Spanish island in the Bay of Cala Llonga in June 2023.

An historic fortress on Mamula Island (off the coast of Montenegro) opens as a luxury hotel in 2023. Mamula Hotel, a member of Design Hotels, will be accessible by boat from the town of Herceg Novi and will have 32 rooms including suites.

Hotels Opening in Asia

Another in the Bulgari Hotel Group set to open in 2023 is the Bulgari Hotel Tokyo, Japan. It will occupy the top seven floors of a massive skyscraper in the Yaesu neighborhood offering 98 guestrooms, including luxury suites, plus a 1,500-square-meter Bulgari Spa complete with 25-meter indoor pool.

Marriott Hotels’ first resort in the United Arab Emirates, will debut in 2023 in Dubai. Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah will be situated along the island’s golden West Beach.

Hotels Opening in the Americas

A 70-room luxury hotel called The Radical breathes new life into a historic building in the River Arts District, an area of Asheville, North Carolina, that once connected the city’s manufacturing to the river and rail. The original, 1920s-era construction was a warehouse for two wholesale grocers and reopens as a hotel in summer 2023.

Brazil-based luxury hospitality brand Fasano Group will open its second hotel in São Paulo, Brazil in January 2023 with Fasano Itaim, located in the heart of the Itaim Bibi neighborhood. Fasano Itaim will occupy a complex spanning almost 5,000 square meters that includes restaurants, bars, and residences.

A luxury treehouse resort, Treetop Hideaways, on Lookout Mountain overlooking Chattanooga, Tennessee, at Ruby Falls, opens in spring 2023. Each treehouse is built with artfully curated reclaimed materials, elevated amenities, and private fire pits with s’mores kits.

Life House, a retro 66-key property built in 1965 will be the first West Coast outpost of the LifeHouse brand when it opens in April 2023. The hotel in Palm Springs, California, will celebrate mid-century modernism by infusing Japanese minimalism and Desert Botanical muses.

The first five-star hotel in Jacksonville, Florida,, The Four Seasons, will be part of The Jacksonville Shipyards, a modernized city-owned marina with a park and a multifunctional building that will include a restaurant. An anticipated opening date is to be determined.
