There are plenty of business and boutique hotels in downtown Portland, but when it comes to Convention Center convenience, you’ll want to stay at Crowne Plaza Portland Downtown. The 10-story property dates back to the 1960’s, but that doesn’t mean the rooms are outdated. In fact, the downtown Portland hotel was renovated in 2021.
The IHG hotel features 241 rooms with 2 suites located on the fifth and eighth floor. I’ve stayed at some old hotels in downtown Portland that are more hip than the Crowne Plaza Portland, but the location to Moda Center and Oregon Convention Center is so worth it. The 3-star Crowne Plaza hotel offers what you would expect from an IHG hotel. There is an on-site restaurant, swimming pool, fitness center, business center and ball room for special events and conferences.
We were in Portland to attend a concert at Moda Center. We had booked a king room for ourselves and a room with two queen beds for our friends who were joining us at the concert. Our room on the 2nd floor of the downtown Portland hotel didn’t offer a view, but it was available for early check-in, so we took it. If you book a higher floor room, the surrounding mountain views are nice.
We didn’t use the sleeper sofa, but the extra piece of furniture was nice as a sitting area for our visiting guests. We were able to offer our friends Keurig Coffee and I’d picked up some local Steven Smith Teamaker teas, a Portland-based favorite of mine. The room also included a small refrigerator. A safe and luggage rack were available in the closet.
The bathroom included a shower/bath tub combination and single sink in the bathroom.
We didn’t dine at Boxwood Cafe, located on the lobby floor. However, our friends stopped in for a drink at the bar before our concert that evening. The on-site restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves Pacific Northwest cuisine.
The staff at the lobby reception area was attentive and friendly. They also warned us not to leave any valuables in our vehicle during our stay in downtown Portland. We would have loved covered parking, but the additional fee for on-property, outdoor parking was reasonably priced for the city location.

If you are traveling with kids, check out the outdoor basketball court or indoor swimming pool with adjoining hot tub. We didn’t try either, nor the fitness center, as we were staying at the hotel to see a musical event.
There are plenty of things to see and do in Portland if you are here for business or pleasure. The Lloyd Center shopping mall is nearby, as is the MAX Light Rail. The hotel offers a shuttle service from Portland International Airport if you don’t need a car. If you have the time, and a vehicle, check out some of the nearby wine tasting rooms.
The hotel offers a Grab & Go area, next to hotel reception on the ground floor. The convenience snack bar features, fresh fruit, yogurt, drinks, frozen ice cream treats from local Portland businesses, as well as candy bars and individual instant cereal packages.
Depending on time of year and demand, room rates at the Crowne Plaza Portland Downtown hotel range from $130 – $300. The hotel offers government and AAA discount rates, as well as multi-day stay rates. The hotel is not dog-friendly. Book your stay directly with the hotel, or compare rates at a booking site like Expedia to see if you can get a better rate.
Review and photos by travel writer Nancy D. Brown who used her hotel points to stay here while attending a Bruce Springsteen concert at Moda Center. As always, all opinions are her own.
