It’s hard to beat the great outdoors and natural scenery in Oregon. Whether the coast, the mountains, central valley, or the eastern desert, all abound with scenic beauty.
So, I am always happy when my husband and I take a road trip to Central Oregon to visit family. The drive is breathtakingly picturesque.
The small town of Roseburg is where we usually stay, and our choice of hotels is always the Holiday Inn Express Roseburg. Located just off Interstate 5, the Oregon chain hotel offers convenience, comfort, cleanliness, and a beautiful location on the banks of the South Umpqua River.
The Roseburg Location
The Holiday Inn Express Roseburg is in the heart of Roseburg, a medium-sized town of about 24,000. Centrally located, this hotel offers convenient access to outdoor activities such as river rafting and a wildlife park to hospitals, medical centers, vineyards and wineries.
Harvard Medical Park is only a 5-minute drive, while the VA Medical Center and Mercy Hospital are close by. The Wildlife Safari, a favorite family-friendly attraction, is only 9.8 miles from the hotel, featuring over 500 animals in their natural environment.
Many may not realize that Roseburg is the birthplace of Pinot Noir – a complex and difficult to grow red grape that has fans around the world. For those who enjoy Oregon wines, especially Oregon Pinot, there are several wineries and vineyards within 10 miles of the hotel. These include Spangler Vineyards (6.2 miles), Melrose Vineyards (7.3 miles) and Abacela Winery (9.8 miles).
The Hotel
With 100 guestrooms, the hotel offers indoor amenities that include a pool, a whirlpool, and a fitness center. Outdoors is a patio with barbecue grills and picnic tables, jacuzzi, all with a commanding view of the river. (Be advised that the outdoor jacuzzi is small and usually crowded).
For business, the hotel has 1,575 square feet of space dedicated for business meetings. This includes a conference space and a meeting room. Dry cleaning and laundry services are available.
The complimentary buffet breakfast is one of my favorites, and includes a variety of fruits, pastries, and breakfast specialties. You can even enjoy reading a complimentary newspaper over breakfast. They are available in the lobby.
For those traveling by car like my husband and me, are especially appreciative of the free self-parking available onsite.
Our Room at the Hotel
The rooms are comfortable and spacious. Features include free WiFi, a microwave, refrigerator, flat-screen TV with satellite programming, and private balcony. Work desks are in each room with a phone that includes free local calls.
Bathrooms have shower/tub combinations along with hair dryers.
I have always known that Oregonians love their pets, especially their dogs. So, it should come as no surprise that the hotel accommodates pets for a fee of $15.00 per stay. However, they exempt service animals from the fees.
Family-friendly as well, rollaway beds are available for $10.00 per night.
The Rates
For the best rates online as well as special packages, book directly with the hotel. Or check Booking.com or Expedia for competitive prices. Depending on day of the week, season and room type, rates run from around $174-230 per night. Check the website for special promotions.

The Bottom Line
The Holiday Inn Express Roseburg is conveniently located with easy access to a variety of medical facilities, thus serving as a home base for supportive families of medical patients. Recreational opportunities also abound, from white-water rafting, hiking, and biking to a drive-through wildlife park featuring animals in their natural habitat.
Known for offering a rather bountiful and tasty breakfast, guests can enjoy a pool, fitness center, and a whirlpool, along with clean and comfortable rooms. See more details here.
Even though this hotel is often fully booked, especially on weekends, several reviews suggest that there may be some dissatisfaction with prices and value.

Hi. Nice article. I too like the holiday in top floor rooms. At night the lights across river a d river views are very peaceful. Couple things. As the birth place of Oregon pilot noir. You forgot to mention Hillcrest Vineyard. Where the first Pinot was planted and the oldest continuously operating winery in Oregon. On the registry of historic places. Also. Check with Delfino Vineyards, I don’t think the bnb is still operating. Cheers!
