When we travel in the Netherlands, we look for affordable hotels in excellent locations. Best Western Dam Square Inn is a delightful hotel in Amsterdam. This independently owned hotel is located next to the Royal Palace, Dam Square and public transportation.
We arrived via Schiphol International Airport and immediately hopped on the train to our Best Western hotel in Amsterdam. By the way, if you prefer public transportation, you’ll want to download the 92 92 app. We found this free app convenient for train and tram schedules around Amsterdam. I also recommend purchasing the iAmsterdam card (online or pick up at Central Train Station store.) This card will get you access to trams and buses, a free canal cruise, one-day free rental bikes and discounts or free entrance to many museums.
The 3-star BW Dam Square Inn is a European boutique hotel with only 38 rooms. Keep this in mind when you are booking hotels for your European vacation; it books up fast.
The historic hotel dates back to the 1700’s and is situated in a former liquor factory. Look for the name of the company, De Drie Fleschjes, etched into the front door entrance. Old-time, black and white photos of the bottle factory and production line are on display in the lobby and hotel rooms.
The 3-story property has an elevator and stairs to hotel rooms. All rooms are standard in size. Don’t expect king beds with the size of mattresses in the United States.
Our room, 118, was light-filled and relatively quiet. If you are a light sleeper or staying on a weekend, bring earplugs, as there is a bar next door that attracts locals and tourists, alike.
The room featured Aroma bath products with eco-friendly packaging. I was pleased to see that slippers were in the closet. The room included a shower and hair dryer.

Best Western Dam Square breakfast
I’ve mentioned before that I love complimentary European breakfasts. Their breads and yogurts are better than what is offered in the United States, even in the most modest hotels. My husband appreciates the espresso machines and I like the hot cocoa made with warm, frothy milk.
Rooms rates at this Best Western Dam Square Inn range from 140-320 euros depending on the season and events taking place in Amsterdam. There is a mandatory city (tourist) tax of 12.5%. The hotel does not offer parking and is not pet-friendly. You can make your reservations directly at the hotel website, or through a booking site such as Booking.com or Hotels.com.
If you are looking for a useful souvenir to remind you of your Amsterdam vacation, or you simply want to stay hydrated during your holiday, you may purchase a small tin water bottle with the hotel’s logo of the building on the front. We found the bottle size perfect for our day trips. Be sure to fill your water bottles at the hotel bar with the complimentary still or sparkling water on tap.
The location can’t be beat if you want to visit the Anne Frank House, numerous museums, local shops and restaurants.
