Killarney, in southwest Ireland, is a charming town, and the Randles Hotel is a perfect stay from which to explore County Kerry. We stayed two nights in this historic gem. In between, our bus tour took in the 111 miles of gorgeous scenery of the Ring of Kerry. We also had time to check out a bit of Killarney.
About the Hotel in Killarney
The Randles Hotel, a former Rectory House, dates back to 1906. Many features of the original gabled Edwardian-style mansion remain. Original stained glass, the entrance porch, and external plaster detailing are some of the attributes of this 75-guest room and suite hotel. The Randles family, who have owned and operated the hotel since 1921, has kept up with the times. The blend of classic and modern is splendid.
On the main floor, several rooms, including the bar and parlors, have an intimate, cozy feel. Artwork, antique accent furnishings, and wingback chairs, couches, and fireplaces create an ambiance of an elegant country home. There are many options for hanging out, whether one wants to be around other guests or find a bit of solitude.

Guest rooms are individually decorated and appointed with country-style furniture. Our deluxe room had a dresser that also served as a TV stand and a desk of rich brown polished wood. Even with three beds, two doubles and a single, our room was large enough not to feel cramped. The large window let in natural light and provided a sense of airiness. Light blue throws and bolster pillows added to the homely, country manor feel, and high-quality linen and comfy duvets gave us a restful night of slumber.
Our bathroom, which was made of gleaming grey marble, had luxury amenities, fluffy towels, and ample vanity space. I eyed the deep tub, thinking how relaxing a bath would be, but I opted to take quick showers and explore instead.
Plenty of outlets, the flat-screen TV, the hairdryer stashed in the room’s dresser drawer, and the electric tea kettle with an assortment of teas provided what we needed.
Other rooms are luxury junior suites and king rooms.
Other Hotel Details
Our included breakfast, part buffet and part order off the menu, was a robust meal of traditional American and Irish options, and a selection of cereals, breads, juices, and coffee.
The Randles Hotel is one place I wished I had my swimsuit. The swimming pool is gorgeous. Painted murals, Greek style statues and blue tiles give an aura of pampering. Instead, I stepped inside to snap a photo and think of the bathing suit I had left at home. The sauna and steam room are also complimentary. Too bad I missed out.
We headed into town to eat dinner, but if we dined at The Randles, there are a couple of options. A deluxe high tea is offered in the drawing room. Wigg’s Bar and Conservatory has a robust drink and food selection. Food tips towards upscale casual fare.
The Killarney Location
The Randle’s Hotel location, just a couple blocks from the heart of downtown, put us within walking distance of Killarney’s shops and restaurant bounty. A friend and I set out the first night after dinner to explore the possibilities. Pubs hopped with a variety of live music, and several shops were still open past 9 pm.
My husband and I took in the spectacular gardens of the Killarney House and Gardens, part of Killarney National Park. Unfortunately, we arrived a few minutes too late to tour the house, but we spent time exploring the vibrant variety of the various flower beds. Dating back to the 18th century, the property once belonged to the Earls of Kenmare. The original house, considered the finest mansion, burned down in 1913. The Killarney National Park is enormous, but we only had an hour before we went into town for dinner.
