Each morning at Mira Earth Studios the sun bathes the interior of the room with golden amber and and the grape vines in the distance glisten under a morning dew that burns off almost immediately in the heat of Valle de Guadalupe’s desert landscape. Mira is a newcomer to this slice of wine country heaven in Mexico’s Baja California Norte. The area is finally getting the accolades its deserves as was one of Mexico’s best food and wine destinations (and not just from the travelers from San Diego and Tijuana who have known it was amazing for years).
Rooms are entered through a narrow, below-ground staircase and then burst open wide with 8-foot ceilings and an open floor plan with the sleeping area several feet higher than the kitchenette and living room to form a short second floor. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors at the far end of each room look out onto the grape vines and boulder-strewn landscape that surround Mira, and open accordion-style for indoor-outdoor living.
The rooms’ decor is muted natural tones and natural fibers that blend well with packed-earth walls, cool cement floors and of course, the striking desert landscape all around. The kitchen in each studio is so far beyond a regular hotel kitchenette it’s not a fair comparison.
Fully stocked with canned cocktails, bottles of local wine, snacks, a frozen sourdough pizza from local pizza maker Tanto Santo, popsicles, charcuterie, and more. If you arrive late and things in the Valle are closed you can rest assured that there is enough in the Mira kitchen for a full meal right in your room. There’s also a full set of cookware, dishware, and silverware as well as a hand coffee grinder, a pour-over filter pot, and an electric kettle. Most of the food and drink products are made by from the excellent local businesses that have set up shop in area.
Each room is equipped with an outdoor fire pit and a individual jacuzzi, kept at a cozy 100 degrees all day long for a soak whenever the mood hits. Sitting around the fire pit at night you can bring out the s’mores-making kit that comes as a courtesy in every room and sip from one of the many wines that have made this region famous.
The owners of the hotel are consummate hosts, ready and willing to provide you will all kinds of excellent recommendations for food and drink in the Valle as well as making reservations if need be. A little further up the hill where Mira is located is the future site of their 45-foot swimming pool and bar area, which until the full restaurant is built and outfitted next year will serve a concise menu of delicious small plates poolside. They are also building an indoor-outdoor lounge area and will eventually expand their 10 current studios to include 30 total and three luxury villas.

The future restaurant is a collaboration with Jose Luis Hinostroza from Tulum’s Arca restaurant, adding to the list of heavy-hitting chefs and their projects in Valle de Guadalupe. Walking trails are planned for the property and they already have a half dozen horses standing by for scenic rides through the area. For a special treat sign up to be chauffeured to local wine tasting in the one of the classic cars owned by the hotel’s next door neighbor (his family sold them the land and still has a home near the property’s entrance).
Mira has taken a promise to care for the Valley seriously, constructing the hotel as sustainably as possible as well designing a water treatment system for reusing their waste water, covering rooms with native-plant green roofs and providing guests with filtered water to drink and refillable bath products. Studios run from $350 to 450 a night with cheaper rates during week.
