Music City Cool: Hotel Indigo in Downtown Nashville

Indigo Nashville downtown

Nashville, Tennessee—otherwise known as Music City USA—has one of the best downtown districts in the country for tourists. Located within walking distance of all of it, Hotel Indigo offers a nice sense of place and an attractive design that blends old and new well.

Housed in a building that was once home to a grand bank, it is right next to Printer’s Alley. This is block-long alley that once housed printing businesses, but is now jammed with bars and clubs. (Don’t worry, the double glazing on the windows here keeps the rooms quiet). Just down the hill you can stroll to the Ryman Auditorium, home to the original Grand Ole Opry, the honky-tonks on Broadway, the symphony hall, and the hockey arena. A few blocks further is the Country Music Hall of Fame and new convention center. Just on the other side of the river, across a pedestrian bridge, is the football stadium where the Tennessee Titans play.

The printing theme is repeated in the lobby and hallways, with interesting historic photos and more abstract ones of gears and equipment. The original bank lobby is the main public space, but revamped for modern times with contemporary furniture and lighting. The main restaurant is here serving all meals, while behind the reception desk is a more popular spot: a large bar and lounge area. This being Nashville, naturally there’s live music some nights. Order a local microbrew and hear a rising star.

All have 32-inch flat screen TVs, cordless phones, alarm clocks with music player connections, free Wi-Fi, and desks with easy-access outlets. The bold furnishings are attractive and the printing gears art over the beds adds an interesting departure from the chain hotel blahs.

Baths are shower-only, but it’s a large shower space and the Aveda toiletries add a touch of pampering. No bathrobes or turndown service here though and staffing is kind of thin—this is a mid-range hotel meant to present good value. Head to the Hermitage a few blocks away if you’ve got a few hundred dollars more a night to burn in Music City. Rates here generally run from $170 to $240 a night for non-suite rooms.
