Finding a hotel in New York City can be a dizzying experience, especially if you are traveling on a budget. If you’re hoping to stay close to the bright lights of Time Square, the Hyatt Place New York City/Times Square is an option that’s friendly on your wallet.
When I arrived the lobby was abuzz. It was a Tuesday night, 6 p.m. and there were people everywhere. It set the scene for my three-night stay at the Midtown West location; the hotel was always bustling.
I stayed in a standard king room on the 8th floor. At 210-square-feet, the room was tight and the king bed took up a majority of the space. A built-in unit in the corner offered a place to hang a handful of clothes, as well as a safe, small refrigerator and coffee maker.
There was also a large chair with a space-saving table that hovered over top of it and a small ottoman. Missing was a desk or a spot to set or open a suitcase, so my carry-on spent my entire stay enjoying the chair. Not the end of the world, but a good reminder to know your needs as a traveler. I made it work, but if I wasn’t traveling solo, I’m not quite sure where another suitcase would have gone.
The bathroom was compact with a small sink and walk-in shower. Shampoo, conditioner and body wash are supplied in refillable containers, but lotion is still provided in single-use plastic bottles.
It’s a city hotel, so naturally there is noise. If you are a light sleeper, I recommend trying to book a room as far away from the elevator as possible.
A complimentary breakfast is offered every morning. It’s a casual paper plate and plastic silverware affair with options like scrambled eggs, oatmeal, cut fruit, English muffins, coffee, tea, and juice. The hotel offers 520 rooms, and breakfast gets very busy, so the earlier you go the better. Grab and go snacks are available from a mini-market area near the front desk.
The hotel boasts a small 24-hour fitness center with cardio equipment and free weights, but most guests get their exercise exploring the city. Hyatt Place New York City/Times Square is within easy walking distance to Times Square, Hudson Yards, and Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
