Located on Highway 290 just minutes from the courthouse square in Johnson City, Carter Creek Winery Resort and Spa offers space to roam amid a peaceful hill country ambiance. The resort is composed of 78 villas. Built on a hillside with no other properties in immediate proximity, it feels a bit like you’re staying in a private residential community. Everything is spread out along a country road with no traffic other than the resort guests.
Carter Creek boasts an onsite brewery and restaurant, a swimming pool, spa and wine tasting room.
Things to do at Carter Creek Resort and nearby
The common areas are inviting an outdoor pavilion for live music and events, and plenty of large lounge chairs for soaking up the Texas sun. There’s also a hacky sack and pickleball area and a pretty arbor for framing that perfect photo. On the weekends there is live music at the Old 290 Brewery and Restaurant. You don’t need to be a guest at the resort to enjoy dining, wine tasting, and scheduled events.
Relax around the pool, or book yourself a spa treatment. The spa is open daily by appointment and offers massage, facials, waxing, and couples massage.
Carter Creek Winery Resort and Spa is just five minutes from historic downtown Johnson City. Though less developed than nearby Fredericksburg, Johnson City has enough to do to keep you busy for at least a couple of days depending on how fast you move.
Texas Wine Tasting
One of the top reasons people visit the Hill Country is for wine tasting–you will find many tasting rooms within a 10-mile radius of Johnson City. However, you don’t need to leave the resort, as there is an excellent wine-tasting room on site. Be sure to try their award-winning sparkling wine.
A few wineries in the area that I like are Siboney Cellars, Sandy Road Vineyards, and William Chris, but there are many others, these are just the places I’ve visited most recently. Between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, there are forty-five wineries and tasting rooms.
Other things to do nearby
Near the square, you’ll find funky antique shops and a science museum for the kids. The boyhood home of former US president Lyndon B. Johnson is on the south side of Highway 290 and is definitely worth a look. It’s still furnished with many of the original household items, and there is a free tour with a park ranger.
Room Details at Carter Creek Winery Resort and Spa
Guest rooms at Carter Creek are referred to as villas–each building on the property houses four villas. Most villas are approximately 400 – 600 square feet and have separate living areas and bedrooms.
Choose between a premier king villa, a deluxe king villa, an ADA king villa, or a double queen villa. Every villa has its own patio with a bistro table and chairs; two flat-screen televisions, a safe, coffee maker, plush linens, bathrobe and slippers, a small fridge (for your hill country wine and beer) electric fireplace, high-speed wifi, and Direct TV.

Dining Options
A continental breakfast is served in the lobby at Carter Creek each morning except on the weekends. Nearby, Johnson City Coffee serves small bites, pastries and sandwiches, and coffee of course.
Old 290 Brewery and Restaurant is a short walk from your villa at Carter Creek. Old 290 serves dinner every night except Tuesday and is open until 8:00 pm on weekdays, and 10:00 pm on weekends. The menu is casual–think burgers, pizza, loaded potato skins, and salads. On Saturday and Sunday brunch is available. I recommend the Texas Omelet.
If you prefer an upscale dining experience you can not go wrong with Bryan’s on 290, just five minutes or less from the resort. Bryans’ 290 has been so successful they just keep expanding and adding tables. There’s bar seating if you are dining alone and don’t want a table. The wine list is also quite good.
