When I travel to another city on a business trip without my kids, I look for a hotel that has local charm, is conveniently located, and is comfortable. The Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, where I recently stayed on a trip to Detroit, was perfect on all three counts.
I’ve always loved the Westin hotel chain, especially their heavenly beds and their heavenly baths, and the Westin Book Cadillac was no exception. Located in the “Book” district of Detroit, the Westin Book Cadillac is conveniently located near Ford Field and other popular attractions. Valet parking and self-parking is available, and the Detroit People Mover (public transportation within Downtown Detroit) is located within walking distance. It’s about 20 minutes from the Detroit airport.
The Westin Book Cadillac was built in 1924 and was included in the National Register of Historic Places. It has recently undergone a $200 million renovation, and the rooms and common areas are modern and updated. In addition to 60 residences, the hotel offers 453 guestrooms, including 35 suites. My room at the Westin Book Cadillac was a traditional king room and included a king bed (a Heavenly bed), a large workspace with great lighting, 42-inch LCD flat-screen television, wireless high-speed internet access, a Heavenly bath, and coffee maker. While I didn’t have any issues during my stay, the hotel staff that I did encounter were friendly and helpful.
The Westin Book Cadillac also offers a full-service spa, an indoor pool, a fitness center, and jacuzzi. Although I didn’t have the chance to swim during my stay, I noticed that the pool was empty most of the time. There are also several restaurants on-site, including the Boulevard Room (which serves breakfast and lunch), 24 Grille, the Motor Bar, Michael Symon’s ROAST, and WBC Coffee (which serves Starbucks). I had dinner at ROAST on my first night, and it was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. My room service breakfast, on the other hand, wasn’t as great, so I’d recommend venturing out to one of the restaurants for breakfast. Alternatively, WBC Coffee offers some light snacks with coffee.
The hotel offers great package deals, including shopping packages, dining packages, and sports packages. Expect to pay from $185-$300 per night for a standard hotel room depending on timing and room type. Since it’s a popular business hotel, weekends tend to be less expensive.
