More upscale than a backpacker hotel, Hotel Do Colégio is an affordable four star hotel located in the city of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, Portugal. With a pedigree that dates back to the 19th century, Hotel Do Colégio exemplifies urban architecture and has served many purposes – from a private Azorean family home to a music school.
The hotel rooms are not fancy, but all 55 rooms include a desk, air conditioning, internet access (for a fee in room) complimentary wifi in the lobby, television, mini bar and room safe. There is a shower/bath option in the bathroom, as well as a hair dryer.
There is a swimming pool in the courtyard and sauna inside the building. A hot breakfast is included with your stay. The breakfast room, with its half-circle arches, was once home to the stables, while the adjoining sun room is flooded with natural light.
The hotel is in a good downtown location with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby to explore. There are also quite a lot of things to do on the island of São Miguel.
Whether you are staying at Hotel Do Colégio or somewhere nearby, I recommend dinner at Restaurant Colmeia within the hotel. Try the local items such as the fresh fish of the day, the cheese platter, blood sausage, paired with a glass of wine from the area.
