Who doesn’t love Carmel, with it’s blue waters and white sand beaches? Everyone from movie star Clint Eastwood, to the golden retriever visiting from San Francisco enjoys walking on the beach and browsing the quaint shops. Okay, so the dog probably doesn’t enjoy shopping, but he certainly appreciates the fresh bowls of water left in front of nearly every store. Some shop keepers even offer dog treats to well-behaved four legged friends. But like well groomed aging celebrities, one grand dame property in Carmel was in need of a face-lift of sorts.
New ownership has brought a coat of fresh paint and much more to Northern California’s La Playa Carmel. This 75 room belle of the ball has upgraded her linens and fluffed her pillow-top mattresses. Using eco-friendly materials, the common rooms, lobby and individual hotel rooms and suites have been decorated, as well as sound-proofed, and high speed internet has been added.
Small rooms – great views
While the rooms haven’t been enlarged, the ocean view rooms still offer windows that open to the back of the hotel so guests can smell the sea air and hear the waves pounding the surf in the distance. The garden view rooms are a better value and look onto the well-tended flower beds.
Carmel with a pool
Situated two blocks from the Carmel State Beach, it’s rare to find hotels in downtown with swimming pools. La Playa Carmel offers a swimming pool on property, as well as beautiful, manicured gardens and a larger than life chess set. The kids will be glad you splurged for a pool and honeymooners will enjoy the private setting.
Champagne Breakfast Buffet
La Playa Carmel’s complimentary breakfast buffet is served each morning in the library lounge. Select from locally-sourced ingredients including fresh pastries, fruits, juices, hot entrees and made-to-order specialties – ocean views at no additional charge!

@Tim
I did see that La Playa did not hire back all the union workers when they re-opened under new ownership. I will pass your comment along to the property. Thanks for stopping by.
