Although May, National Bicycle Month is winding down, bike riding season is far from over. At Hotel Scoop, we’ve stayed at hotels and inns where lodging and bikes are paired. With summertime comes thoughts of a beach. Here are places where beaches and bikes go together.
Lodging and Bikes Near the Beach
At the Schooner Inn in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on-site bicycle rentals make hopping on two-wheel transportation simple. The Schooner Inn, located along the ocean at the end of Virginia Beach’s bustle of beach shops, hotels and eateries offers several room style options. We stayed in a double queen room with a complete kitchenette. Our room had a perfect ocean view. This is a classic hotel with repeat visitors. A fun time to visit is in September for the Neptune Festival. If you go then, check out the International Sand Sculpting Championship.
On Hawaii’s Big Island, PACIFIC 19 Kona is a boutique hotel with urban bicycles for guest to use. Dana found an affordable stay here with much to recommend. This hotel in the center of Kailua-Kona has showcases Hawaiian art and photography in its guest rooms. Live music, food trucks and firepits add to nighttime enjoyment.
Gosby House Inn is a historic beauty in Pacific Grove, California. Dana also had a fine time here. The inn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, built in 1887 is minutes away from Ocean Front Lovers Point Park. Guests can borrow the inn’s bicycles on a first come first serve basis to ride along the downtown streets or enjoy the scenery along the oceanfront path. Other amenities at the inn include: freshly baked cookies, complimentary breakfast and a wine hour.
At Rivera Maya, Mexico, Mary Jo Manzanares found plenty of fun in the sun with her stay at Reef Playacar. This all-inclusive beach resort has bicycles as part of the bounty. Lush jungle like landscape of the resort, gorgeous beaches, six restaurants and three pools are among the details Mary Jo took in on her R&R infused stay.
A Reopening Lodging and Bikes Destination
In August, the Sundial Beach Resort on Sanibel Island, Florida is reopening! The hurricane in October 2022 that damaged much of the island didn’t spare the resort. I was fortunate to stay in a two-bedroom condo at this gorgeous place in 2021. One afternoon, a friend and I rode the resort owned bikes along the island’s bike paths to the historic lighthouse.
The lighthouse, built in 1884, is a perfect destination for a beach/bike pairing. Guests at the Sundial Resort will find some new additions. Beach Bites is a new restaurant with a Mexican-spired menu. There is a new Bocce Ball court, expanded pickleball courts and a resurfaced pool. Guest favorites like Turtle’s Tiki Bar is rebuilt and recreational and beach equipment are brand new. Reservations are open.
Check out each lodging’s website for package deals. Also Booking.com and Hotels.com have discounts as well. Don’t forget other discount types like senior citizen, AAA or military.
