Ocean House, Newport Oceanfront Inn on Oregon Coast

If you are looking for a boutique bed and breakfast in Newport, Oregon, Ocean House is an excellent choice. This Newport oceanfront inn is tucked in a quiet residential neighborhood, steps from Agate Beach.

Walls of glass and wood shingles cover the back of Ocean House in Newport. A cement retaining wall and cement driveway lead to the underground parking of the inn. A grey SUV is parked in the underground parking area.

My husband and I have been spending quiet a lot of time on the central Oregon coast. We particularly enjoy Newport, Oregon for its windswept beaches, excellent restaurants and easy access to Eugene, Oregon. The 8-room inn was previously a private home. Upon entering Ocean House you’ll feel like you’ve arrived at your own elegant beach house.

However, at this beach house, you won’t have to make your bed or breakfast! We were greeted by the innkeeper who gave us a brief tour of the inn and a little history. The 1937 boutique bed-and-breakfast reminds me a little of California’s Winchester Mystery House. Every so often, portions of the original house were expanded.

Ocean House living room with hardwood flooring. An area rug is in front of the gas burning fireplace. A light-colored stone wall surrounds the fireplace, rising up from the floor to ceiling. Two wicker chairs flank the gas fireplace. A small, wood slab, dark colored table stands between the fireplace and a caramel colored leather sofa.

Each room has a nautical themed name, from High Tides to White Caps, all with a view or peek at the Pacific Ocean. Room options on the 3-story inn are mainly king beds, with one room, Sea Rose, offering a queen. Don’t let the queen size bed dissuade you. Sea Rose offers a glass-enclosed sun room that is super cool. On our April visit it was pouring rain. I could have sat in that room all day reading a book, sipping tea, and looking out to the sea.

Rooms are large and all feature comfortable beds, high thread count, robes and lovely bathrooms. We stayed in High Tides, the penthouse suite on the third floor. Very tall people should be mindful of the slanted roof, when exiting the bed. However, it wasn’t a problem for me or my husband.

Gourmet Ocean House breakfast

Breakfast at Ocean House is lovely. This is why I refer to Ocean House as a boutique coastal bed and breakfast. The Newport oceanfront inn has its own chef. Unusual for a boutique 8-room property. We enjoyed two days of tasty breakfasts – from a mushroom and Swiss cheese quiche with bacon to a light and fluffy vegetable strata with pork links. The chef also makes the morning pastries from scratch.

Guests during our stay ranged from newlyweds, to a mother and daughter staying together in The Cottage, as well as a solo traveler and a husband and wife that come back on a yearly basis. If I were to return for a girlfriend getaway, I’d reserve the cottage and if I were coming for a solo, mindful escape I’d reserve Windswept. Windswept includes a king bed, ocean view, gas fireplace, soaking tub and walk-in shower.

Ocean House mushroom quiche with 2 strips of bacon. A puff pastry square, logo Ocean House coffee mug and glass of orange juice are on the table. An identical meal is across from the food on the same table.

Ocean House room rates range from $200 – $600, and include a gourmet breakfast, evening wine and beer social hour, afternoon cookies and complimentary WiFi. You’ll get your 10,000 steps in at Ocean House if you plan on walking to Agate Beach. It’s about 100 steps to the beach. Lucky Gap Trailhead is a hiking option, as is nearby Yaquina Head Lighthouse

For those not wanting to stroll on the beach, wander the garden paths or sit on the patio at one of several fire pit areas with ocean views. Please note that all rooms are accessible by stairs.
