For a Western Colorado escape, Leroux Creek Inn & Vineyards is a secluded B&B surrounded by vineyards, and the valleys and mesas of the Grand Mesa. On the southeastern flank of the Grand Mesa located on 54 acres, gaze from the the Leroux Creek Inn’s flower bedecked patio onto their vineyards. Near the small town of Hotchkiss, the acreage also includes a creek, dry arroyos, grass pastures, sagebrush, and trees.
This West Elk mountain escape sets the stage for an unforgettable getaway housed in an intimate southwest Adobe-style inn. You have arrived at Leroux Creek Inn & Vineyards. Husband and wife innkeepers, Yvon and Joanna, welcome you into their B&B through a courtyard and then into a foyer opening into a living room, decorated in a luxurious combination of leather and southwestern style with log beams, tile floor, and kiva fireplace. Guest refrigerator and library/TV room is also available.
Accommodations
Offering five spacious guest rooms, my assigned “Mesa Room” accommodations are elegantly Victorian with a southwestern flare, and when I opened the blinds, I was rewarded with a spectacular view of their vineyards. (Other views offered are the mountain peaks or high desert mesa.) Unlike so many other B&Bs with antique beds and equally ancient, lumpy mattresses, my queen-size bed was amazingly comfortable and the private bathroom is spacious.
After dinner, we donned our fluffy bathrobes for a soothing hot tub, located outside less than 30 seconds to the left of the patio.
Bonus: Innkeeper Joanna has created her own line of beauty products, Leroux Creek Spa Vine Therapy, and those all-natural products are offered as the Leroux Inn’s bathroom amenities. Once you’ve used her products, you’ll be happy to know products are available for purchase on the main floor.
The Leroux Vineyard
A couple of years ago, Yvon and Joanna Gros made the decision to temporarily close the B&B portion of the Leroux Creek Inn in 2004 to concentrate on the winemaking process, debuting the Leroux brand in 2006. Today, the addition of the Leroux Vineyard allows them to incorporate their unique offerings of wine through the on-site wine tasting room and by offering 3-4 day culinary experiences at the Leroux Creek Inn.
Of the 54 acres, the Leroux Vineyards encompass 4 acres, growing two hybrid varieties: Chambourcin and Cayuga. Grape hybrids are made from crossing generally less flavorful native American rootstock with prestigious European grapes called vinifera. The results are uniquely Leroux, and I discovered a favorite amongst the organically grown, on-vintage Cayuga white grapes.
The grapes are organically grown, located in the West Elk Viticultural Area (AVA). It’s a tight grape growing community, sharing glasses of wine, knowledge and experience amongst the local vintners.
At the on-site wine tasting room on-site, Yvon enchants guests with this retelling of their journey into winemaking and creation of a unique wine.
Dining
Breakfast is included with your room rate, and I awoke to fresh brewed coffee, yogurt with locally sourced strawberries and sweet cherries, and fresh baked muffins, overflowing with local apricots. I seated myself under the grape arbor on the back patio overlooking the vineyard and helped myself to the muffins, before realizing I’d eaten a total of 3! Simply amazing!
In addition to being an innkeeper, Yvon is also an award-winning French chef, and my visit included a Classic French dinner. The meal was served at sunset, again on the back patio with the lovely vineyard providing a backdrop, complimented by Leroux’s wine.
Appetizers included fresh sweet beets with goat cheese, pate and fresh bread. Dinner began with a salad, and then finished off with a traditional chicken breast with a French mustard sauce. Dessert – fresh fruit!
